The Terre Haute Community Band will take a musical flight into the mysteries of outer space that have intrigued mankind for centuries.  The adventurous and curious are invited to explore the “Final Frontier” with the band at their concert on Saturday July 31st at 8:00 p.m. in Fairbanks Park. All THCB concerts are free.

John Williams “Fantasy of Flight” offers a medley of movie themes that most of the audience will find very familiar.   “E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial” and “Hedwig’s Theme” from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” represent only two of the many films scored by this award winning composer.

“Mars, the Bringer of War” is the first of Gustav Holst’s seven “Planet” compositions. Holtz seemed to consider “The Planets” a progression of life. “Mars” perhaps serves as a rocky and tormenting beginning.  In fact, some have called this movement the most devastating piece of music ever written!

No exploration of the skies would be complete without a look at the romantic possibilities and no song does that any better than Hoagy Carmichael’s “Stardust”. The “Symphonic Suite from Star Trek” is the music from the most recent Star Trek movie, covering the early years of Captain Kirk, Spock, Scotty, etc. Arranger Jay Bocock has masterfully put the best parts of the movie soundtrack together.

A new acquisition for the band, “To Sail Beyond the Stars” by Timothy Loest was commissioned by the Illinois Music Educators Association. Loest is currently Director of Bands for the Itasca Public Schools in Itasca, Illinois.  Another selection on the playlist,

“The Phantom Regiment” written by Leroy Anderson is also the name of the Rockford Illinois High School Drum & Bugle Corps.  Paul Whear is an Indiana musician who received his Masters of Music from Depauw University and has a number of compositions and arrangements to his credit including “March Onward” on the concert program..Sabre Dance”  by Katchaturian, “Festival Prelude” by Arthur Reed and “Spirit of Canaveral” by  Floyd Barnard round out the evening’s selections.

The Conductor of the Terre Haute Community Band is Yvonne Newlin, the Performing Arts Coordinator at Lincoln Trail Community College in Robinson, IL.  The Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the Terre Haute Parks & Recreation Department.  The band appreciates the grant received from the City of Terre Haute and the media sponsorship with WFIU.
